This article compares star rating with life cycle design. 0star rating is
' synonymous with a glass box in the desert', 10star rating requires to keep it
comfortable without air conditioning. However, to achieve 10 star needs to
remove all thermal control impacts, which is still far away from low carbon
design outcome.
LCD provide a method for designers to know all carbon impacts through its
lifespan. In addition, LCD consider the function and to minimize carbon
footprint. Thus, it's much easier to reduce footprint by making it smaller,
having more people live in and enhancing its lifespan. So designers can use LCD
to answer the questions Alex have put forward at the beginning of the
article.
I do think life cycle design is a good technology to know carbon
footprint, but it still has advantages. For example, a life cycle design is not
always a reliable indicator of true carbon footprint, this would lead to
mistakes. however, everything has a risk, anyway, I think LCD is useful to help
design low carbon building.
